Discover St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands

The largest of the three major U.S. Virgin Islands, St. Croix is rich in history, culture, and natural beauty, making it the perfect choice for a romantic getaway, family vacation, or a breathtaking scuba diving trip.

With a tropical climate and endless white sand beaches, the weather forecast for St. Croix is frequently given as “88 degrees, mostly sunny, 10% chance of rain.” Cited as the most cosmopolitan of the U.S. Virgin Islands, St. Croix offers a diverse landscape ranging from the rainforest of the north to the dry barren east end.

Christiansted
, located on the north coast, is one of two main towns on the island of St. Croix. Popular tourist attractions include:
  • Fort Christiansvaern (also known as Christiansted National Historic Site) built in 1749 to protect the island from invaders
  • 18th century Danish-style architecture including several churches built in the 1700’s
  • Walking along the waterfront St. Croix Heritage Trail
On the southwest coast, Frederiksted is the second main town on St. Croix and has become a port of call for several cruise lines during their Caribbean routes. Highlights of this historic town include:
  • Whim Plantation Museum
  • Cruzan Rum Distillery
  • Fort Frederik (established in 1760)
  • Lawaetz Family Museum (northeast of Frederiksted in Estate Little La Grange)
  • Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts
St. Croix offers an abundance of other attractions including:
  • gorgeous beaches like Cane Bay Beach and Chenay Bay Beach
  • Estate Whim Plantation Museum
  • St. George’s Botanical Gardens
  • Three golf courses to choose from – Carambola, Buccaneer, and the Reef Golf Course
  • Salt River Bay National Park (aka Columbus Landing) where Columbus first discovered the island in 1493
  • ruins of over 100 sugar mills throughout the island
  • Divi Carina Bay Casino
  • Point Udall, the easternmost point in the U.S.
With an average water temperature of 82° and visibility ranging from 60-100’, it’s no wonder St. Croix attracts scuba divers and water enthusiasts from around the world. Divers can experience a variety of diving including wreck diving at Butler Bay; a night macro dive at Frederiksted Pier; exploring the canyon walls at Salt River; or taking in a shore dive at Cane Bay.

For both divers and snorkelers alike, Buck Island Reef is an Underwater National Monument known for its abundance and variety of marine life. Entirely surrounded by reef, visitors can snorkel or scuba dive through the amazingly clear waters viewing the colorful coral and may even be lucky enough to see a hawksbill turtle.

St. Croix Travel Tips
  • Renting a car requires driving on the left
  • As a U.S. territory, no passport is required for U.S. citizens
  • Duty-free shopping is available in both Christiansted and Frederiksted
  • Popular souvenirs include a Crucian hook bracelet and Cruzan rum
Notable St. Croix Events
  • St. Croix Crucian Christmas Carnival in January
  • Krewe de Croix Mardi Croix Parade in February
  • A Taste of St. Croix in April
  • Ironman Triathlon in May
  • St. Croix Environmental Turtle Hatching Watch in July
  • USVI Folklife Festival in August

Travel Writer Recommendation: Best Western Chateau Granville

Super natural, Vancouver, B.C., was thrust into the spotlight earlier this year with the world presentation of the 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games. This vibrant city is nestled at the base of the Coast Mountain Range on the shores of the Pacific Ocean.

A truly beautiful city, Vancouver has a plethora of wonderful attractions available to visitors some of which include:
  • Stanley Park (larger than New York Central Park)
  • Vancouver Aquarium
  • Gastown
  • Chinatown
  • Yaletown
  • Science World
  • Capilano Suspension Bridge
  • Granville Island
  • Robson Street
A perfect option for accommodations within walking distance of many attractions is the Best Western Chateau Granville (1100 Granville St., Vancouver, BC V6Z 2B6, Tel: 604-669-7070). With summer rates starting as low as CAD $149 per night for a Tower room ($119 Courtyard; June through September), the price and location are hard to beat.

Tower One Bedroom Suite
Our room at the Best Western Chateau Granville room featured:
  • large 450 sq foot suite with a generous living room with sofa, television, microwave, coffee maker & mini fridge (can accommodate up to 5 guests)
  • business work station with generous sized desk and three telephones located throughout the suite
  • all rooms feature air conditioning; many feature a balcony
  • complimentary wireless high speed internet
  • separate spacious bedroom area with two very comfortable double beds (plus a second television)
  • inviting bathroom with granite counter top & wonderful shower pressure plus a heating lamp

Amenities

The Best Western Chateau Granville is home to The Edge Social Grille & Lounge – a ‘fine-casual’ dining experience popular with Vancouver locals and visitors alike. If you’d like to check it out, visit their website and take advantage of the ‘search for a table’ feature. Enjoy the Baked Ricotta ($8.50) for lunch or choose the highly-recommended Wild B.C. Salmon ($24) for dinner.

Other amenities offered by the Best Western Chateau Granville include:
  • Concierge and porter service (including Vancouver sightseeing tours)
  • Guest laundry & dry service
  • Multilingual staff
  • Meeting & banquet facilities
  • Complimentary pass to Fitness World

Transportation Information

If you’re driving, gated underground parking is available at the Best Western Chateau Granville for $14 (plus taxes) per night. The Whistler Express Bus pick up is one block away while the Quick Shuttle Bus to Seattle is only a ½ block away.

Travel Writer Approved!
Even though the Best Western Chateau Granville is a somewhat older hotel (as are the majority of hotels in Vancouver), the cleanliness, comfort, location, and value more than make up for anything it may lack cosmetically. I would recommend the Best Western Chateau Granville to anyone visiting Vancouver for business or pleasure.

For more information or to make reservations, visit the Best Western Chateau Granville and Tourism Vancouver.

Test Your Metal in Squamish, British Columbia, Canada

For mountain biking, it’s widely known that it really doesn’t get much better than the Sea to Sky region of British Columbia. With the world famous extreme North Shore and Whistler a stones throw away, Squamish stands out with an unparalleled variety of trails.

Few places in the world can compare to Squamish when it comes to mountain biking. Located in a rainforest-filled valley surrounded by snow-capped mountains, Squamish offers an almost endless selection of incredible mountain biking trails for every skill level and riding style.

From gentle cruisers to easy cross-country routes, to obstacle-laden trails and extreme downhill descents, there’s a single track trail for every rider in Squamish. Much of the incredible trail work is thanks to the Squamish Off Road Cycling Association (SORCA), a local bike club that organizes weekly rides, races and numerous trail maintenance days.

Considering Squamish has some of the best and most highly regarded mountain bike trails in North America, it’s a sure bet we also host one of the most challenging bike races around. The legendary Test of Metal race is the ultimate extreme 67 kilometre crosscountry mountain bike race. With more than 1,200 metres of climbing and 35 kilometres of singletrack, the Test of Metal is possibly one of the most demanding and gruelling bike races out there.

Despite this, the limited-entry race never fails to sell in record time every year as enthusiasts and athletes from all over North America vie to compete in this inimitable riding fest. Best of all, the race is just part of the week long Squamish Mountain Bike Festival that celebrates the area’s dedication to the two-wheeled lifestyle.

Ireland - Something for Everyone!

It’s the great challenge for every family, trying to find a holiday that everyone can enjoy equally. Relax, the solution is near at hand. Ireland is not just the world’s friendliest destination (Lonely Planet 2008) but the home of family fun too.

There’s so much for everyone to do and see together, wherever you go on the island. Here are just a few highlights of the Cork and Kerry area -
pick up a convenient car hire Cork Airport and you're good to go!

The amazing coastline of Cork and Kerry isn’t just famous for its delightful beaches (many of which are of Blue Flag status) but for the many exciting activities they host, including windsurfing, horse riding, sailing and diving.

Try spotting dolphins and seals on boat trips and, whatever your age, the ancient mystery of the Skellig Islands, a World Heritage Site, cannot be missed, whether it’s a sea cruise around the islands, discovering their extraordinary story at the Skellig Experience Centre or visiting Skellig Michael on boat and climbing to the extraordinary monastic settlement.

You can come face to face with sharks and piranhas and discover the amazing fish life of the Atlantic at Dingle Oceanworld or discover the excitement of wild animals and big game at Fota Wildlife Park.

There are many ways to discover Cork’s beautiful harbour, with its islands, coves, beaches and bays. Cork Sea Safari, just a short walk from the city centre, offers fascinating tours of the harbour and if the family fancy meeting friendly dolphins or enjoying a barbecue on the tour, it can be arranged.

Kids and adults will love exploring the mysteries of space in a thrilling new interactive way at the award-winning Cosmos @ the Castle in the 16th century Blackrock Castle Observatory in Cork City. Discover how the universe was created and how life on earth developed at this state-of-the-art interactive exhibition.

Another unmissable attraction for all the family is just a short bus or taxi ride from the city centre. Those who climb to the top of the tower of the world famous 15th century Blarney Castle will be rewarded with the amazing views and, on kissing the Blarney Stone, the gift of eloquence!

Imagine being transported back to the 19th (and early 20th) century, that’s what’s in store when you visit Cork City Gaol, where fascinating exhibitions, sound effects and amazingly lifelike figures recreate life of that time both in and out of the Gaol. While you’re there you can also discover the remarkable story of Irish radio at the Radio Museum Experience in the former Governor’s House.

You can journey even further back, to prehistoric times in fact, at the Dinocafe, Ireland’s only dinosaur exhibition. Based in the picturesque village of Castletownroche, it will bring the kids face-to-face with life-sized predators from the past.

Hone your driving skills at the Kart World Adventure Centre in County Cork, explore the extraordinary subterranean world of Kerry’s Crag Cave, or brave the raging rapids and spectacular flumes at the incredible Aqua Dome in Tralee in County Kerry, which is packed with special features for all the family.

Continental & United are now United!

With the recent announcement of a merger between Continental Airlines & United Airlines, the combined company will serve 370 destinations in 59 countries worldwide.

What does this mean for consumers?
Generally, it's a great opportunity for traveling consumers:
  • it means better efficiency which will reduce overall costs for consumers
  • the two airlines compliment each other in that they offer different routes; there is minimal overlap for their domestic routes and no overlap on their international routes
  • this lack of overlap also means fewer jobs are likely to be lost
  • sustainability and profitability for investors
  • the best frequent flyer program in the industry
Some consumer advocate groups have expressed concerns that fare prices will rise, however, as per previous mergers (Northwest with Delta; TWA with American) these claims seem to be unfounded.

Ultimately, the merger of the two airlines helps to ensure the vitality of the airline industry within the United States; better this, than for two airlines to dissolve.

The Continental Airlines and United Airlines merger is expected to finalize at the end of 2010. Although changes may occur at a later date, both Continental & United will continue to service all communities within their routes until this time.

For a sneak peak at the merged Continental/United network, visit United Continental Merger.

For more general information, visit United Continental Merger or view Frequently Asked Questions.

A Taste of the Irish!

Have you been lucky enough to visit Ireland and enjoy their wonderful cuisine? For those of you looking to recreate those same tastes at home, the Little Shamrocks website may just become your next best friend.

Providing Irish recipes, food, and travel accommodations, Little Shamrock offers one stop shopping. Here's a quick look at some of the products available online:
  • Donnelly Irish Style Bangers
  • Club Rock Shandy
  • Wholegrain Mustard with Guinness Stout
  • Ribena Conc Blackcurrant
  • Kerrygold Irish Vintage Cheddar
  • Quick Scone Mix
  • Jacob's Afternoon Tea Biscuits
Here's an example of only one of the delicious recipes offered by Little Shamrocks, Irish Chicken Wings with Guinness:
  • 2 tablespoons cooking oil
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 4 lbs. chicken wings
  • 1 carrot, peeled and quartered
  • 1 parsnip, peeled and quartered
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme leaves
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 3/4 cup of Guinness
In a large skillet, heat oil over medium heat. Add onion and garlic and sauté for about 3 minutes. Remove vegetables with a slotted spoon. Add the chicken wings and cook about 5 minutes on each side, until lightly browned.

Add the onion, garlic, carrot, parsnip and spices to the pan. Pour Guinness over chicken and vegetables and bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce heat to low and simmer 30 minutes. Uncover and cook for 10 minutes until sauce reduces by half. Discard carrot and parsnip (or eat them if you want to).

Place chicken wings on a baking sheet and brush with remaining sauce. With the broiler on low, broil for about 5 to 7 minutes on each side, basting the other side when you turn them. Remove from pan, place on a platter and serve hot. These make a great appetizer for your next party. Note: Don't discard the remainder of the Guinness...drink it! Slainte!

Make a Real Living as a Freelance Travel Writer

Becoming a freelance travel writer. Doesn’t that sound exciting? Well, truth be told, it is.

If you’re thinking about joining the writing world in any capacity, I recommend picking up a copy of the informative book, ‘Make a Real Living as a Freelance Writer: How to Win Top Writing Assignments’ by Jenna Glatzer.

My copy is more than a little dog-eared but that’s the way a good book should be, don’t you think? Even though I’ve been writing for more than thirteen years, I love to pick up writing books wherever I go as I always find some bit of information or idea that I haven’t considered.

And don’t be misled; being a freelance travel writer is hard work. The payoff is not in the money but in the travel experiences themselves. There’s not always steady income so it can be a somewhat worrisome job at times but the thought of travel always keeps me going. Where will I be next? Paris? Hiking? Jamaica? A weekend road trip? This is the life.

If you’ve read or decided to grab a copy of Glatzer’s book for yourself, tell me what you think!

In the 286 National Parks across the US, there are over 330,000 Junior Ranger participants each year with an estimated 90% of them achieving Junior Ranger status.
