Pay Only What You Weigh With Samoa Air!

Well, here's the latest controversial idea when it comes to airline travel.  Samoa Air has just introduced the world's first 'Pay Only What You Weigh' concept.

According to their website, "you are the master of your Air'fair', you decide how much (or little) your ticket will cost".  Wow, like you can choose to make that decision once you're at the airport?!

Samoa Air goes on to say there will be "no more exorbitant excess baggage fees, or being charged for baggage you may not carry.  Your weight plus your baggage items, is what you pay.  Simple."

But is it that simple?  In some ways, it does make sense: Samoa Air operates small Britten Norman (BN2A) and Cessna 172 with capacities ranging from only 3 to 9 passengers.  Samoa Air says it's willing to calculate advance online ticket purchase costs through 'guesstimates' but also states "don't worry, we will weigh you again at the airport."  Just what everyone looks forward to in life :(

I'm not really sure how I feel about this but I suspect it would be a very embarrassing situation for most passengers.  I don't know about you, but I hate being put on a scale in the privacy of my doctor's office never mind at an airport where assumingly other passengers could be watching, eek!

Who knows if this latest 'pay only what you weigh' concept will actually fly? But you can bet it's receiving plenty of attention from the media in the mean time.
